A Pound of Wheat for a Denarius...

The post entitled, "A Pound of Wheat for a Penny..." was a direct reference to Bible Scripture in the Book of Revelation:

A pound of wheat for a penny, and two pounds of barley for a penny; but do not touch the oil or the wine.
A penny is the modern translation of the Roman word denarius, which at the height of the Roman Empire was one day's wages, or one ounce of silver (a US Silver Dollar--today worth more than fifty dollars). I could make various comparisons such as the fact that Jesus' ransom (thirty pieces of silver) was about one hundred fifty dollars in today's money, but I digress.

The point is, can you imagine paying fifty dollars for a loaf of bread? [Disclaimer: a loaf of bread is about the same price as one pound of flour. The word "pound" was originally ephah in the Bible. One ephah would be needed to make about a pound of flour.] Sounds like hyper inflation, doesn't it?

When you consider the fact that a loaf of bread using the gold standard would be twenty five cents, it certainly does raise questions about the US Government's current fiscal policy. Are we heading towards a financial collapse that would rival the terrible story written about in the last book of the Bible?

I contend that if we continue down this path of reprehensible fiscal irresponsibility, then we are in for some extraordinarily difficult times ahead. Even if we stop and reverse course, we are in for a serious depression while the country spends the next few years paying off its debt. However, the resulting prosperity on the back end--due in no small part to the return to Capitalism and Small Government--would be truly astounding.

What happened to the "shining city on the hill"? Progressivism and collectivism, the destroyers of Liberty, have sold us the snake oil that is "shared prosperity". That concept is spending us to death. We need to turn back the tides, and take our country back.

Am I saying that we need to go John Galt? Perhaps not. I think we should start by going Thomas Jefferson all over the looters in Congress. When he returned from Europe and saw the state of the Union, he was spurred into running for President of the United States. He dismantled much of the collectivist parts of the government (including reducing the size of the military).

We would at this time be best served by following his example. If that fails to work, then I suggest that we follow John Galt's example, and see if the United States Government can do its "job" with no revenue. Maybe that would finally get the attention of the looters in Congress.

Bottom line is, if we don't get our house in order, then we are going to find out the true meaning of the word "biblical".
